Switch back to GNOME Classic on Ubuntu 11.10 in 2 steps!

Finally, an easy way of going back to the GREAT GNOME Classic!!!

Switch Back to GNOME Classic Desktop in Ubuntu 11.10

Have you installed Ubuntu 11.10 and want the look of your old desktop back? This tutorial will guide you though installing and switching back to the Ubuntu Classic Desktop (GNOME) in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.

Ubuntu 11.10 uses Unity for default sessions and will fall back to Unity 2D on computers without 3D graphic controller support. To avoid this all together you’ll need to revert back to Ubuntu Classic Desktop without Unity, here’s how to reclaim the look and feel.

Before getting started, we suggest you Learn Linux Basics and follow these precautions.

Steps to Follow

Step 1

Open up a terminal (Shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + T) and run the command shown below to install GNOME session fallback.

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

Step 2

After installing, logout of your session and click the gear icon before logging in again. Choose either GNOME Classic for a Compiz version or GNOME Classic (No effects) for the plain Metacity version and proceed as usual.

Ubuntu 11.10 Login Screen

That’s all there is to it, your desktop environment should look the same once you login again. Optionally, you may want to move Ubuntu window control buttons from left to right side too.

Note: You may edit panels by holding Alt and then right clicking on the panel bar.

RAMDisk – Create a drive from your memory (alternative to SSD)

This is a great tool that you can get for free. It let’s you create a disk out of your system memory, these days with the amount of memory that come  with machines, it’s certainly a great tool to have and what’s best, it’s just one click of a button.

Why use it?

  • Speed up Internet page load times
  • Control what files and programs are stored into memory (loaded at boot time)
  • Create temporary disks for added security
  • Speed up disk-to-disk activities such as video encryption and audio ripping
  • Accelerate databases
  • Reduce compile times

Features

  • Freeware version (up to 4 GB disk size). Disks larger than 4GB require registration and a single-user license which can be purchased for $14.99 USD.  Enterprise licenses are available for commercial and government entities–contact usasales@dataram.com for more information.
  • Universal compatibility with Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008. Universal compatibility means: All versions, releases, service packs, editions, and architectures (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Up to 32 GB RAMDisk (in registered/licensed mode)
  • Save and load features allow RAMDisk to appear as persistent storage even through reboots

Browser Benchmarks! Opera, Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer

Hello friends! I recently did an intensive benchmark using Futuremark’s great browser benchmarking tool, Peacekeeper. Anyone can simply go to the Peacekeeper website and run a benchmark that only takes about 15-20 minutes. Anyway, here is a benchmark I did on the same exact machine. (Quad-Core Xeon, 12GB RAM, Quadro Graphics, Latest Flash/Java, Windows 7 64-Bit)

As you can see, Opera 11 clearly wins. After you run a benchmark, it actually tells you who had the highest score so far… here is a screenshot of that;

And finally, here are the average results that are on the website for all of the mainstream browsers. (Note: Opera 11 is not included when its been out for over a month now! (non-beta))

So there you have it.

My final thoughts are that Opera 11 is clearly in the lead right now, but in terms of functionality, features and compatibility, it is not in the lead at all. I still prefer Firefox and and I very much looking forward to FF 4.0. I do have Opera 11 and Chrome on my systems, but I use them only for browsing the news or looking up something in Google really quick. The Xmarks utility is a must for me and is not yet compatible with Opera 11, so until then, I cant even consider it as my main browser.

What are your thoughts?

IE9 screenshots and more info

Check out what they have posted over at Neowin about IE9.

An early Internet Explorer 9 build has revealed a new download manager for Microsoft’s popular web browser.

Screenshots of the build leaked to Chinese website Cnbeta earlier this week. The screenshots reveal a download manager for pausing and canceling downloads, a new icon for Internet Explorer 9 and what appears to be greater security control of add-ons. The new features are an early look at what features Microsoft is planning for the first beta of Internet Explorer 9. The screenshots do not reveal any UI changes apart from what appears to be a new icon. Neowin has independently verified the screenshots and we can confirm these are genuine and from a build distributed to internal and external partners.

Microsoft originally unveiled Internet Explorer 9 at PDC 2009. IE 9 will take advantage of the power of the GPU for all page rendering and developers can exploit this using CSS, DHTML and javascript. A new JS engine (codenamed Chakra) will also be built into Internet Explorer 9 with greater interoperability and standards support all round. Features such as rounded corner CSS support will be built in. In January, Neowin revealed that Microsoft is planning to enhance tabbed browsing in IE9. According to a software patent, the Quick Tabs feature in Internet Explorer is likely to be enhanced with better functionality and greater tab management options.

Microsoft is also planning broader support for HTML5 in Internet Explorer 9 through its new script engine. Microsoft recently performed W3C Web Standards tests on IE9, including HTML5, SVG 1.1 2nd edition, CSS3 media queries, CSS3 borders & backgrounds, CSS3 selectors, DOM level 3 core, DOM level 3 events and DOM level 2 style. Microsoft, with the help of W3C, performed a total of 192 tests on a variety of browsers. Internet Explorer 9 scored 100% in all eight tests, while every other browser, except Firefox in DOM level 2 style tests, didn’t score perfect in any of the test categories.

Microsoft originally began scouting for Internet Explorer 9 beta testers in March. In an email to testers, Justin Saint Clair – Program Manager of Internet Explorer invited testers to join a “select group of IE9 Tech Feedback participants.” Neowin understands that Microsoft will introduce a beta of Internet Explorer 9 in early September.

Clearly, this is almost right!

I present to you, the trilogy meter!

Hey everyone! I got great news… Firefox 4 Beta 1 is out and it is great!

I have always used Mozilla/Netscape since the 90s but in the last year, the browser from Google, Chrome, has really impressed me by its layout and its speed. Well… Firefox has copied their basic up on top tabs layout and it is very fast! Anyhow, check it out for yourselves! Here is a screenshot of mine in action as I write this…

You can download Firefox 4 Beta 1 here.

ENJOY!

You can download it over at the Filehippo as always.

howto minimize applications to the system tray in windows vista or 7

this is a really cool and very simply application. it basically allows you to minimize anything to the system tray that may  annoy you.

for example, in my case, i run a TeamSpeak server, which is basically a server for people to talk on for free while playing games together… the server runs on my computer and is very annoying because it is always on my taskbar and looked like this…

what you see in red is ALWAYS there, i cannot get rid of it….

after installing the application, this is how it now looks…

now all I must do is double click the icon you

see on the second picture, and I will get what you see in the first image at the top of this post.

here are all the rest of the details and specs…

By default Windows doesn’t provide this facility but here I’ll tell you about a free, small and excellent utility which can provide this facility.

PowerMenu” is a free utility which provides this essential feature which Microsoft has not implemented in Windows yet. It adds following 4 extra options in Windows control menu (the menu which appears when you right-click on windows titlebar or its taskbar button):

  • Priority
  • Transparency
  • Always On Top
  • Minimize To Tray

You can change window priority which is a feature which Windows Task Manager also provides. Its a critical option and you should not change it unless required.

You can change window transparency:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v374/vishaal_here/TransparentWindow.jpg

You can set a window to stay always on top.

And at last which is the main and most important feature of this utility, you can minimize any application to System tray:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v374/vishaal_here/MinimizedtoTray.jpg

As you can see, I have minimized Explorer window to System tray using this utility and I can restore it back any time by double-clicking on its icon in system tray.

So its a must have utility for Windows users and the best part is its free. But you can donate the developer for his hard work.

Here is a small guide on how to get office 2010 to look and feel like office 2003 and prior. Here is a screenshot of my word 2010. (click on the picture to see it fullscreen)

we all know that new office 2010 has a new feature “ribbons” which has totally changed the look-n-feel of office applications.

Eminem Album Leak – Recovery – (download link included)

Well, Eminem has really stepped up his game. I have listened to the entire album and it has some incredible tracks, he has gone back to his old self, simply talking about his emotions and how he feels about certain things that are relevant to everyone and of course, his struggle with drugs/prescription drugs.

I feel the album has a good flow throughout it and it really does surprise you, I liked it after only listening to it once. Lil’Wayne is in the album as is Rihanna. Lil’Wayne really kills it!!! I know that he has been dying to be one of Em’s albums and I am sure he gave it his best and you can tell.

Good work guys! And sorry Em for the leak, but its not my fault.
